 Contractures Scars

Scars are unpredictable, whether they are caused by surgery or an accident. The formation of a scar depends as much upon the way your body heals as it does on the nature of the injury or the surgeon’s skill in repairing it.

The factors that affect scarring after a wound include the size and severity of the wound, its shape and direction, the original color and thickness of your skin, and the blood supply to the injured area. Whether a scar is severe enough to merit plastic surgery is a personal decision, and is different for each patient.

It is impossible to remove a scar completely. However, plastic surgery can often do much to lessen the severity of a scar, making it less noticeable by applying or injecting steroids or through scar revision, a commonly used surgical procedure.

If you are thinking about having your scar treated through plastic surgery, the following information may help you with your decision. Since each person scars differently, it cannot cover every facet of your particular situation, so make sure to involve your doctor in your decision-making process.

  Contractures Scars

Burn injuries or other wounds that result in the loss of large skin areas can form a scar that pulls the edges of the wound together through a process called contraction. The scar, called a contracture, can affect surrounding muscle tissue, tendons, and joints, and in the worst cases can restrict movement.

To treat a contracture, a plastic surgeon will remove the scar tissue and replace it with a flap of skin through skin grafting. Occasionally Z-plasty may be called for. New developments in scar treatment, such as tissue expansion, have improved surgeons’ abilities to repair these scars. If you have had your contracture for a long time, you may need physical therapy to restore full function of injured tissues.
