Breast Reduction for Men (Gynecomastia)

More men are turning to plastic surgery to feel better, look younger, and even help with their careers. But their bodies, goals, and temperaments are significantly different from those of women.

Men want a better defined, more angular shape on both their bodies and faces. They want to look youthful and vibrant, rather than "beautiful." In Beverly Hills Ambulatory Surgery Center our specialty is Plastic Surgery and we do it the RIGHT .

For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can easily resolve the problem, enhance their appearance and lifestyle.

Gynecomastia

Some men have significantly larger breasts than the “average” male. The term for this rather common condition is Gynecomastia, affecting a significant percentage of men. Although there are some medical causes of gynecomastia, there is no known cause or associated medical condition in the vast majority of cases. In many cases, male breast enlargement is due to excess fat in the breast area rather than a unique medical cause. This term for this is pseudogynecomastia and is by far more common than true gynecomastia.
   Procedure:

If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of the breast enlargement, the excess tissue will be removed with a scalpel. The excision may be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction. In a typical procedure, an incision is made in an inconspicuous location--- either on the edge of the areola (the dark skin around the nipple) or in the under arm area. Working through the incision, the surgeon cuts away the excess glandular tissue, fat and skin from around the areola and from the sides and bottom of the breast. Major reductions that involve the removal of a significant amount of tissue and skin may require larger incisions that may result in more conspicuous scars.

In extreme cases where large amounts of fat or glandular tissue have been removed, skin may not adjust well to the new smaller breast contour. In these cases, excess skin may have to be removed to allow the remaining skin to firmly re-adjust to the new breast contour.

If liposuction is used in addition to excision, the cannula, a slim hollow tube is usually inserted through the existing incisions. If only liposuction is required, an incision less than one-half inch in length is made around the areola or in the underarm area. The cannula is inserted and, using a vacuum pump, the surgeon moves through the layers beneath the skin, removing fatty tissue and suctioning the fat from the body. There is generally no pain involved, but some feeling of vibration or friction may be experienced.

   AFTER YOUR SURGERY:

Whether you've had excision with a scalpel or liposuction, you will feel some discomfort for several days after surgery. This discomfort can be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon. In any case, you must arrange to have someone drive you home after surgery and to assist you out for a day or two, if needed.

You'll be swollen and bruised for awhile -- in fact, you may at first wonder if there's been any improvement at all. To help reduce swelling, you'll probably be instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for a week or two, and for a few weeks longer at night. Although the worst of your swelling will disappear in the first few weeks, it may be three months or more before the complete final results of your surgery are apparent.

In the meantime, begin getting back to your normal life. You'll be encouraged to begin walking around on the day of surgery, and can return to work when you feel well enough; this could be only a day or two after surgery depending on the type of work you do. You'll be told to stay away from any job or sport that risks a blow to the chest area for at least four weeks. Any stitches will generally be removed about one to two weeks following the procedure.

Avoid sexual activity for a week or two, and all heavy exercise for about three weeks. In general, it will take about a month before you're fully back to all of your normal activities. You should also avoid exposing the resulting scars to the sun for at least six months. Sunlight can permanently affect the skin's pigmentation, causing the scar to turn dark. If sun exposure is unavoidable, use a strong sun block.
