Scars are unpredictable, whether they are caused by surgery or an accident. The formation of a scar depends as much upon the way your body heals as it does on the nature of the injury or the surgeon’s skill in repairing it.
The factors that affect scarring after a wound include the size and severity of the wound, its shape and direction, the original color and thickness of your skin, and the blood supply to the injured area. Whether a scar is severe enough to merit plastic surgery is a personal decision, and is different for each patient.
It is impossible to remove a scar completely. However, plastic surgery can often do much to lessen the severity of a scar, making it less noticeable by applying or injecting steroids or through scar revision, a commonly used surgical procedure.

AFTER SCAR REVISION
No matter what procedure you and your doctor decide is right for you, it is essential to follow the doctor’s instructions after the surgery to ensure proper healing. Even with simpler, outpatient procedures, it is best to gradually return to your normal physical activities.
During the healing process, it is important to remember that it is impossible to completely remove a scar. The amount of improvement in appearance after a procedure depends on the size and direction of your original scar, the nature of your body’s healing process, the quality of your skin, and your own ability to care well for the wound after the procedure. Don’t worry if your scar looks worse after the procedure than it did before—this is not unusual, and it may take as long as a year to see the full results of surgery.
