   Blepharoplasty - Eyelid procedure.

As we get older, most individuals will start to see a difference in their eye area -- more laxity, bags below and above the eye; some times so much that the upper lid seems to disappear underneath the extra fatty area under the brow bone. This procedure can give a more youthful appearance to an otherwise older, more tired looking face improve your appearance and add to your self-confidence.

If you're over thirty, chances are that some or all of the above may be present. During the late thirties and early forties, the elasticity in the thin and delicate eyelid tissues starts to give out, even if the rest of the face still looks perfect.

Cosmetic Eyelid surgery: What is it?

Blepharoplasty is designed to modify your eyelids to improve your vision and restore a younger appearance. That is cosmetic eyelid surgery. Surgery on the upper eyelids raises the droopy eyelids. The lower eyelids benefit by having the swelling and puffy appearance eliminated. For most clients, successful eyelid surgery results in looking more rested and looking and feeling younger.

Who is suited for blepharoplasty?

Ther are some health conditions that suggest you might not be a good candidate for this surgery. But if you work closely with your surgeon, you can find out what you need to know to make this important decision.

If surplus tissue is keeping your eyes from opening properly this procedure might be for you. Removing that extra tissue can make your eyes look more youthful and alert. Specific conditions that Blepharosplasty can help include:

  • Upper eyelids that are puffy or baggy
  • Lower eyelids with excess skin
  • Excessive bags or dark circles under the eyes
Blepharoplasty is often included with other modifications such as a face-lift or skin resurfacing or brow lifts. If the sole purpose for the surgery is to improve appearance it is less likely to be  covered by most insurance companies.

Brows (Eyebrow and forehead lift)

Do you appear tired even though you aren't? Is the skin of your upper eyelid overhanging the normal lid crease and nearing the eyelashes? Are there bulges and bags where there shouldn't be? Do your eyes appear smaller than they did in years past?

As the eyelid muscles and skin age, they sag, creating bulges. Appearance can sometimes be improved by removing some of the fat behind the muscles and or red raping the muscles.

The most suitable candidates for this procedure are typically men and women who are healthy and psychologically and emotionally stable, with realistic expectations. Most patients that opt for this procedure are 30 years or older, but some younger patients do opt for this procedure if droopy, baggy eyelids are hereditary.

Eyelid Surgery might be covered by Insurance

Eyelid Surgery and Insurance

If the skin of your eyelids interferes significantly with your vision, insurance may be involved. Some people have severely sagging skin in their upper eyelids that blocks their vision. If your vision is really reduced by sagging skin or tissues around your eyes, it is possible that your insurance will pay for the surgery.

When will insurance cover the fees for eyelid surgery?

Only if the surgery is specifically intended to repair a medical problem can you expect insurance coverage. If sagging skin is obscuring your vision or impairing your eyelid function you may qualify for surgical repair. Each insurance company is different as is each patient is unique. Sometimes an insurance company will cover this surgery when they discover your droopy skin around your eyelids limits your vision.

Our insurance specialist will contact to your insurance to find out if your insurance company is cover the procedure.

People who have droopy upper eyelids or puffy lower eyelids can become distressed and even feel discriminated against. Sometimes it makes them look disinterested, or bored or annoyed or too tired to work.

What causes puffy or baggy lower eyelids?

Puffy eyelids certainly make people appear older. They also give the appearance of being fatigued. Yes, it is the result of aging.

Specifically the membrane under your eyelid gets weaker and the fatty protective tissue around your eyes tends to bulge forward.  The muscles and skin of the lower eyelids respond to this pressure by stretching. That is what causes the bags under your eyes. This can also be a genetic condition that can be seen in young adolescents.

Puffy eyelids are most noticeable in the morning because the fatty tissue holds water and after you have been in repose all night, gravity wins and your eyes look puffier.  During the day that fluid drains, again the work of gravity. The extra pressure of this fluid continues to aggravate the situation which began as the simple aging of the inner membrane of your eyelid.

No matter how much eye cream or lotion you use to make your skin look smooth, that weak aging membrane inside your eyelids will not be healed.  The real cause of that puffiness is the inner membrane and that is what needs treatment.
