Capsular Contracture

Breast Augmentation, Mammaplasty (Implants & Enlargement) how it can make you look and feel good

What types of complications can occur with breast augmentation?
Breast implants have been used for over 40 years. Most women have no problems. However, your Plastic Surgeon should review the list of possible complications during your consultation. Two possible complications following Breast Augmentation surgery are:

  • Capsular Contracture
  • Deflation of the Implant

Of the two, the most common complication that we see after surgery is capsular contracture. This is tightening of the capsule that surrounds the implant. The area often responds to massage, but may need surgery to eliminate the capsule. The average incidence of capsular contracture in Breast Augmentation among all surgeons ranges from 10-15%. I recently reviewed my last 200 Breast Augmentation Cases to calculate that my capsular contracture rate is 5%, which is well below the average!

Deflation of the implant is less likely than capsular contracture. If this should occur, the deflated implant would need to be removed and replaced.

m o d e l

Breast implantation is generally done for enlarging the size of the human breast. Sometimes the breast implantation is also done for reconstructing the shape and size of the breast. This process of breast implantation is also called as breast augmentation or breast enlargement. It is observed by the American society of plastic that the breast augmentation is the third most commonly done cosmetic surgery.

There are basically two types of breast implants namely the Saline implant and other is the silicone gel. This classification is dependent on the material type that is filled in the
Implant. Depending on the structure, shape and size the implants are of a variety of types like the round implant, the anatomical implant, the smooth implant and the textured implant.

The textured type of implants have a rough outer surfaces compared to the other type of implants. The roughness is introduced because that creates cohesion between the implants and the tissues surrounding the implants. This also helps the textured implant to maintain a proper vertical alignment with the body. There is a phenomenon called as the capsular contracture. In this case there are tissues that grow around the breast and make the breast to squeeze the new implant. It is because of this that the implant becomes harder than it actually was.

The basic reason behind developing the textured type of implant was to overcome the problem of capsular contracture. One more advantage accompanied with the textured type of implant is that they do not face the problem for positioning the implant. The point with the textures type of implant is that they face the problem of rippling. Also there are no strong evidences that show the problem of capsular contracture to be reduced. Also the cost factor is important here. The texture type of breast implant is more costly than the smooth type of implants. The textured type of implants also faces the problem of leaking.

Finally any type of implant is associated with some advantages and disadvantages. It depends on the women who have to undergo the implantation to decide which implant to go for according to her suitability.

   Other Implant Options:
Depending on the look you wish to achieve and your unique physical characteristics you and your doctor will choose from a variety of implant styles, shapes, sizes and textures. Some implants give the breast a more rounded appearance, while others create a breast shaped like a teardrop.

Saline implants are the most popular implant option in the United States. The watery sterile saline solution used in breast implants is isotonic (has the same salt concentration as the normal cells of the body and the blood) and presents no health risk to the patient.
