Back pain

Back pain is a nasty and undesirable malevolence which hinders progress, productivity and our heath. It is a misunderstood concept that only old people are prone to back pain. An emerging young populace has been complaining of stress and lower back pain due to the sedentary lifestyle they face. Lower, middle or upper back pain could be acute which could last for a few weeks or it could be chronic which could go beyond 3 months.

Most of us are silent sufferers of the pain, some of us even choosing to overlook it till the pain invites adverse symptoms and irritations. Some of us may have experienced the back pain radiating down to the back of the thighs or even to the calves, ankles and feet. Neglect of the back pain could cause a high amount of damage to the health.

What are the causes of back pain?

      1. Poor posture:About 80 percent of back pain could be related to lack of proper posture. You must have heard your parents and teachers telling you constantly to sit straight and not slouch. Well their words are worth their weight in gold because a correct posture while sitting or standing is important to maintain your vertebrae (back bone) in right shape.

      2. Prolonged sitting:Those who have a job where being seated is necessary are more prone to chronic back aches. Sitting in front of the computer for a prolonged time, sitting in cars, planes or chairs for a long time can lead to back ache. Sitting position, especially slouching, causes maximum strain to the back and those who already have a back pain should be extra careful.

      3. Incorrect lifting procedures: How many of us make sure that our back is straight while lifting objects? The answer is few. Those who lift objects with rounded back, especially heavy objects are bound to suffer from back injuries. The pressure on the interverterbral discs of the back is much higher when heavy objects are lifted with a bent back.

      4. Overtraining: Fitness enthusiasts tend to strain their backs because of over-training. Exercise is important for the young as well as the old, but too much of it can cause damage, especially to the back.

      5. Car seating: Many cars do not provide adequate lumbar support. Bad seating can cause strain to then bones, muscles, discs and ligaments of the back.
