Nipple Surgery
Nipple surgery is a plastic surgery procedure specifically designed to alter and improve the appearance and size of nipples for both women and men. This kind of surgery is quite often one of the follow-up steps for reconstructive surgery or a breast lift or breast augmentation.

Who is Nipple Surgery for? |
|
| |
Patients with these characteristics are most likely well suited for nipple surgery:
Inverted nipples:
The nipple (areola) may show an indented appearance or insufficient tissue.
Enlarged nipple:
Nipple size can seem too long or large and out of proportion to the breast. There may be excess tissue that actually extends beyond the nipple.
Asymmetric nipples:
This means the nipples are not the same on each breast. This may be from prior surgery or simply by aging. The nipples may be uneven.
Patients who intend to breast feed are not recommended for some procedures. Sometimes nipple surgery is necessary after reconstructive surgery or breast lift surgery in addition to breast augmentation surgery. |

The Nipple Surgery Procedure |
|
| |
The surgical process involves making an incision either in the nipple or the areola. Sometimes it is necessary to remove excess skin before closing the incision. Sometimes the surgeon lifts the area adjacent to the incision to reposition it. To minimize swelling or discomfort a bandage is applied.

| Most of the time, recovery from this type of surgery is fairly swift. It is an outpatient procedure using local anesthetics. Therefore the recovery time is reduced. The patient is likely to experience swelling or bruising and discomfort which generally diminishes over the course of a few days. Some patients may encounter pain from the surgery and this can be treated with prescribed medication. |
